Electoral Reforms Experts Advocate Stronger Electoral Justice To Protect Nigeria’s Democracy

Electoral Reforms Experts has advocated for a stronger electoral reforms justice system to protect the Country’s young democracy with a view to intensify and highlights the need for a strong legal institutions that can handle election-related disputes and protect the credibility of the country’s democratic process.

Legal scholars and democracy advocates at the event organized by the KIMPACT Development Initiative, KDI, focused on Electoral Integrity Summit, hammering on the need for Nigeria to strengthen its electoral justice framework to ensure that election disputes are resolved fairly, promptly, and transparently.

The Experts further argue at the KDI programme that a reliable system for addressing electoral grievances is essential for maintaining public trust and promoting democratic stability.

The experts made the call during a public lecture and policy discussion focused on the role of electoral justice in sustaining democratic governance in Nigeria.

Speakers at the KDI event stressed that the credibility of elections does not depend only on the voting process but also on how disputes arising from the elections are handled.

According to the speakers, a strong electoral justice system must involve competent judicial institutions, clear legal frameworks, and independent electoral bodies capable of managing conflicts that may arise before, during, and after elections.

They further explained that delays in resolving electoral petitions and inconsistencies in judicial decisions often weaken public confidence in the electoral process. To address this challenge, they recommended reforms that would promote efficiency, transparency, and accountability in electoral adjudication.

The experts also urged government authorities, policymakers, and electoral bodies to work together in strengthening legal and institutional frameworks that support democratic practices. They emphasized that electoral justice should not only focus on resolving disputes but also on preventing electoral irregularities.

Participants at the KDI event noted that improving the electoral justice system would contribute significantly to political stability and national development. They stressed that credible elections remain the foundation of a functional democracy.

They however concluded, urging relevant stakeholders, including the judiciary, electoral bodies, civil society organizations, and policymakers, to prioritize reforms that will strengthen electoral justice and safeguard Nigeria’s democratic future.
