EFCC Arraigns Two Over Separate N15m Fraud Cases in Enugu, Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, July 9, 2026, arraigned two defendants in separate courts over alleged fraud cases involving more than N15 million each.

EFCC Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed both arraignments in a statement.

In Enugu, the Commission’s Zonal Directorate arraigned Chukwuebuka Anacletus Ogbonna before Justice Vincent C. Ezeugwu of the Enugu State High Court. Ogbonna, who operates as Monpere’s Autos, faces a four-count charge of stealing by conversion amounting to N15.4 million.

The EFCC alleged that Ogbonna collected N15.4 million from petitioner Paulson Nwakoby in October 2023 to import three vehicles, with a promised delivery date of December 25, 2023. He allegedly failed to deliver the cars or refund the money. 

Two of the counts detail N4 million payments made in September 2023 and between November and December 2023, which the defendant allegedly diverted for personal use.

Ogbonna pleaded not guilty. Prosecution counsel Rotimi Ajobiewe requested a trial date and that the defendant be remanded. Justice Ezeugwu adjourned the case to July 16, 2026, for hearing of the bail application and ordered Ogbonna remanded at the EFCC facility.

In a separate case in Abuja, the EFCC arraigned former Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) Chairman Danladi Yakubu Umar before Justice U. P. Kekemeke of the FCT High Court, Maitama. Umar faces four counts bordering on nepotism and conferment of corrupt advantage totaling N15,587,833.76.

The Commission alleged that Umar, while serving as CCT Chairman and Tenders Board Chairman, facilitated the payment of N5.5 million in October 2021 to his wife through Kurchmives International Limited, a subcontractor in a CCT painting contract. 

A second count alleged he caused N6 million to be paid in January 2024 to his wife through Portal Realities Limited, a company linked to a CCT digitalization contract.

Umar pleaded not guilty. Prosecution counsel Christopher Mshelia asked for a trial date and remand at Kuje Correctional Centre. Defence counsel S. Edward moved for bail. 

Justice Kekemeke adjourned to July 15, 2026, for bail hearing and remanded the defendant in Kuje.
