The Anambra State Police Command has vowed to uncovered the truth behind the death of the former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Mr Okechukwu Akaneme, by conducting a thorough investigation into his death.

It would be recalled that Mr Okechukwu Akaneme passed away on July 10, 2025, after sustaining spinal injuries during an enforcement operation by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) on October 11, 2024.
According to reports, Akaneme was allegedly brutalized by ASWAMA offcials and police officers over an outstanding debt, which led to a physical altercation.
The incident resulted in Akaneme suffering a fractured backbone, and despite initial investigations, no conclusive actions were taken.
The Anambra State Police Command has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to review the case file and conduct a comprehensive investigation into the events surrounding Akaneme’s death.

The Command emphasized that no officer is above the law and that any personnel found to have acted unprofessionally or unlawfully will face disciplinary and legal measure.
The Akaneme family has rejected a condolence message from the Anambra State Government, describing it as a “media stunt” aimed at distorting facts and obstructing justice.
The family has however demands justice and accountability for Akaneme’s death.

The police command also assured the public that they will leave no stone unturned in unraveling the truth behind the death.
The Police has also promised to conduct proper investigation to examine the actions of both the waste management authority and police officers involved in the incident.
