APC Aspirant Alleges Son’s Assault, Abduction by Ekiti RRS, Seeks Tinubu’s Intervention

An Ekiti State governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abimbola Olajumoke Olawumi, has petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the alleged assault, abduction, and unlawful detention of her son by operatives of the Ekiti Rapid Response Squad (RRS), demanding an immediate and independent investigation into the incident.

In an open letter addressed to the President, Olawumi alleged that the officers stormed her Abuja residence, forcefully gained entry, and violently attacked her son before taking him into custody. 

She described the action as unlawful and accused the operatives of acting outside established policing procedures.

According to her, the officers transported her son to the Kubwa Phase 4 Police Station, where they detained him for over twelve hours without charge or access to his family. 

She insisted that her son was unarmed and had committed no offence at the time of his arrest.

Olawumi linked the incident to her political activities in Ekiti State, particularly her challenge of the APC governorship primary process involving Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji. 

She said she sought judicial redress over her disqualification and publicly criticized what she described as governance lapses in the State.

The aspirant also cited her comments on the management of funds appropriated for youth development and her support for youths involved in a controversial agricultural empowerment programme in Ekiti. 

She suggested that her advocacy for accountability may have prompted the alleged intimidation.

Referencing the lessons of the #EndSARS protests, she warned against a resurgence of police brutality and urged the Federal Government to uphold the rule of law. 

She maintained that failure to act decisively could undermine public confidence in law enforcement.

Olawumi disclosed that she had earlier relocated from Ekiti State to Abuja due to security concerns. 

She called on the President, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, to order a transparent probe and ensure that those responsible face disciplinary action if found culpable.

Copies of the letter were also forwarded to the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu; presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga; and the Nigeria Police Force. 

Meanwhile relevant authorities are yet to issue an official response to the allegations as at the rule of filing this report.
