Benue Massacre: Dan Sabi Commends Tinubu’s Planned Visit To Affected Community

A Kwara-born Abuja based Human Rights Activist, Comrade Dan Sabi has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s planned visit to the affected Benue State community, to sympathize with the people there over the massacre of over 200 of them in the Yelwata area of the State.

Comrade Dan, the current FCT Branch Secretary of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, also sympathized with the victims and their families over the attack.

The Human Rights Activist said the visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Benue State community is timely, most especially to forestall any future occurrence of such killings. 

Comrade Dan Sabi used the opportunity to offer some key recommendations that can help restore lasting security in the affected Benue Community.

First on the lists of Comrade Dan Sabi’s recommendations is the need to organize dialogue over incessant killings in the Benue State communities, and end the era of unnecessary reprisal attacks, which must have been happening as a result of the history of conflicts.

He added the urgent need for the Federal, State and the various representatives of the parties involved to come together for deliberations on how to find and achieve a lasting peace in the troubled areas. 

Second on the lists of his recommendations is the need to fast –  track the processes of bringing in State Police as a way to curb and nail insecurity in the coffin by resolving every national question regarding the creation of the State Police.

He also expressed the views for the federal government to expedite efforts by reviewing the constitution through the legislative procedures, that favours the establishment of the State Police. 

He also espoused that the pressure usually on the State Governors, who often times appears toothless and helpless in the face of the rise in insecurity. 

Additionally, he adduced that the security threats facing many states are complex because the non-state actors involved in carrying sophisticated weapons are in some cases overwhelmed as a result of the porous security architectures.

The last of his recommendations is the need to strengthen, energize, solidify and finance the activities of the promoters of the community policing, and encouraged them, that there are no failures in intelligence gathering in the communities. 

He condemned the slow response rate from the security agencies which he said might have contributed to the high casualties when attack comes. 

He urged the security agencies to include as part of their new strategy a toll free number for citizens to reach security agents in time of distress and report suspicious activities.

They should also be equipped to respond swiftly to security threats.

Concluding, he urged Nigerians to be hopeful, assuring that the President will be matching words with action in his quest to restore security to troubled communities in Benue state and Nigeria at large.
