Ekiti APC Settle For Consensus Ahead National, State Assemblies, LGA Chairmen Elections

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has settled for a consensus arrangements ahead of the National Assemblies elections involving the Senate and the House of Representatives, the State House of Assembly as well as the local government chairmanship elections primaries scheduled later in 2026.

Rising at a stakeholders meeting held on Saturday in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, leaders of the All Progressives Congress have reached an unanimous agreement ahead of the primary scheduled to hold in the State before the State Governorship Election expected to hold on the 20th of June, 2026 across the State. 

In a press release signed and made public after the stakeholders meeting on Saturday, the State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State Chapter, Mr Segun Dele Dipe, revealed that the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has adopted a consensus approach towards the upcoming Local Government election, as well as for the National Assemblies elections involving the Senate and the House of Representatives with the aim to promote unity in and inclusivity within the party.

Dipe in his press release added that, the Ekiti APC party stakeholders after deliberations on the time table made public by the State Independent Electoral Commission, SIEC, resolved that for a rancour-free selection of candidates of the party for the election, consensus was the way to go.

Going by the election time table, recently released by the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission, the activities leading to the election is a year long and has since commenced from Monday December 12, 2025.

Those who spoke at the all important meeting of the Party included the State Chairman, Hon (Barr) Olusola Elesin, two former State Governors in persons of the first Executive Governor, His Excellency Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo and His Excellency Asiwaju Segun Oni. The trio assured members that the Consensus approach, if pursued, would foster a sense of cooperation and shared purpose among party members, ultimately strengthening the APC’s chances of success in the elections, instead creating any form of polarisation.

Others who spoke are Chief Alaba Bejide, who represented the male elders of the party, Chief (Mrs) Ronke Okusanya who represented the female elders, Rt Hon. Oladapo Karounwi, who represented leaders from the Central Senatorial District, Hon. Kemi Olaleye, who represented both the womenfolk and leaders from the North Senatorial District, as well as a former Deputy Governor, Surveyor Abiodun Aluko, who also represented the party leaders from the South Senatorial District. All of them welcomed the consensus approach and argued that it would help to resolve potential conflicts and promote a more peaceful electoral process, as against the chaotic outcome of the past party primaries.

In attendance were the State Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, BAO, who expressed his delight at the pro activity of the party towards the local government election and said he was in agreement with whatever resolution the party leaders would come up with, his deputy, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, Party execs from the State, all the 16 Local Government Areas and all the 177 wards. 

Also present were the elected members of the National Assembly, past and present, all members of the State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Rt Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, all elected Chairman of the LGA/LCDAs as well as the State Executive Council members.

Governor Oyebanji however conveyed to the meeting apologies from His Excellency, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Cyril Fasuyi, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Hon. Oyetunji Ojo, Hon. Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Hon Wunmi Ogunlola and Mr. Wale Fapounda SAN. 

Some of the key benefits of approaching the LG/LCDAC election through a consensus approach identified by all include: that it would promote unity, increase legitimacy, encourage cooperation, reduce conflict and foster inclusive decision-making.

Going by the SIEC time table, the Local Government election is scheduled to hold in December 2026, and the APC’s consensus approach is seen as a strategic move to gain an advantage in the polls.

According to the SIEC time table, activities leading to the election actually commenced from Monday 15 December 2025 with the issuance of Notice of Local Government Area/Local Council Development Area Election. This was followed by collection of Forms EKSCF 001 and 002 by Political Parties from SIEC for clearance, etc. of candidates on Monday 2nd of December 2025.
