Falana Empowers Victims Of Domestic Violence With Working Tools

Sponsors 6 Months Training In Skills Acquisition For Them

The founder and chairperson of the Women Empowerment and Legal Aid, WELA, Mrs Funmi Falana, SAN, has empowered 28 victims of domestic violence with working tools six months after equipping them with trainings in relevant skills and trades in Lagos State

Welcoming the graduands and guests to the event held at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja in Lagos on Tuesday, Mrs Funmi Falana, SAN, expressed fulfilment empowering victims of domestic violence and putting smiles on their faces six months after they were trained in skills such as tailoring otherwise known as fashion designing, shoe making, arts and crafts, catering, hairdressing as well as how to produce cosmetics among others. 

Falana described the 9th edition of the WELA women empowerment programme done in commemoration of the 2024 International Human Rights Day as a huge success. 

Adding, Mrs Funmi Falana explaining,  said, “what informed her decision to empower the people, was to add values to the lives of those who have at one time or the other been assaulted domestically. She expressed her  willingness to continue to buy and present articles of trade such as tools and instruments of trade to enabled them start a new life”.

She also described her resolve to continue to help the poor on the need to touch the society and empower a section of it already considered deprived and oppressed. 

In her own words, she said, “there is a section of the society that needs to be touched, that needs attention. The only way to know one lived a fulfilled life is to know how many lives one has been able to touch on the earth”. 

She promised to extend the programme to Ekiti and Ondo States soon to complement its existence in Abuja and Lagos.

Earlier, the keynote speaker at the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Caleb University in Lagos, Professor Foluke Dada Lawson while delivering her lecture titled: “Rural Women and the Importance of Women in Achieving the Social Development Goals, SDG’s, emphasized the need for our society to first of all, look inwards and looked at how the policies and norms can improve the lives of the women.

He pointed out, that laws should not only be on paper, but are to be implemented and enforced in such a way that women would be able to contribute effectively by ensuring that necessary education, economic and financial powers are deployed to develop small scale businesses, for women to excel in their families and enriched in the society at large.

In her own remarks, the former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Adejoke Orelope Adefulire commended Mrs Funmi Falana, SAN, the founder and Chairperson of WELA, and her husband Mr Femi Falana, SAN, for using their personal resources to empower the less privileged people, orphans, vulnerable people by sponsoring their trainings to acquire skills to aid their development.

She used the opportunity to appeal to individuals in Nigeria, families, groups and also philanthropy not to leave everything to the country alone, but to also come out to contribute theirs by empowering poor people in the Country. 

Important guests at the event include: the Retired Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Ayotunde Philips; Popular Music Artist, Folarin Falana, Falz and Funke Akindele popularly known as Geneva among others.
