In an exclusive interview, Chief Dauda Lawal, aka, Awise, a renowned traditional medicine practitioner in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, shared his experiences and insights into the world of traditional medicine.

Speaking with Treasure Newspaper in his office located besides the defunct Hill Mart Hotel in Ado Ekiti recently, the Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Traditional Medicine Practitioners, who has over 60 years of practice, revealed that his area of specialization is fertility treatment for women, and has helped numerous women conceived through traditional medicine.

Chief Awise, who inherited his skills from his father, the Late Chief Lawal Aruwa, a powerful Chief, influential and herbalist, explained that he communicates with spirits and uses his knowledge of roots and leaves to create medicines. 

He emphasized that his practice is not just based on traditional methods but also incorporates modern techniques, such as measuring dosages.

The Awise commended the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, for his support of Traditional Medicine Practitioners. 

He revealed that the Governor appointed him to a Board created to oversee the practice of traditional medicine in the State.

The Traditional Medicine Practitioner also highlighted the importance of regulation in the industry, stating that the government needs to ensure that only licensed practitioners are allowed to operate. 

He emphasized that this will help to minimize quackery and false accusations against genuine practitioners.

Awise’s interview provided a rare glimpse into the world of traditional medicine, highlighting its benefits and challenges. As the Nigerian government continues to explore ways to integrate traditional medicine into the country’s healthcare system, practitioners like Awise are playing a crucial role in promoting the importance of traditional medicine.

The interview also underscored the need for collaboration between traditional medicine practitioners and the government to ensure that the practice is regulated and standardized. 

With the support of the Ekiti State Governor, Awise and other practitioners are optimistic about the future of traditional medicine in Nigeria.

Chief Dauda Lawal commended the former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo for ensuring that traditional medicine was registered nationally and that, all states of the Federation are generally affiliated to the national body including all the 774 local governments.
