Man Sent To 12 Months Imprisonment For Stealing Two Tubers Of Yam

A 40 years old man by name Cletus Gandu has been sent to a 9 months imprisonment for stealing two tubers of yam by a Magistrate Court sitting in Kafanchan in Kaduna State. 

Gandu who before sent to prison on Thursday morning in Kaduna State, confessed in court stealing the said two tubers of yam on the grounds that he was starving and could not afford anything to eat because of his poor financial situation pleaded with the Court for leniency. 

Meanwhile, giving his ruling, Magistrate Micheal Bawa ordered him to be remanded in prison custody for 3 months for criminal trespass and another 9 months for the offence of theft, totaling a period of 12 months. 

Earlier, presenting the matter before the court, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC Prosecutor, Mr Marcus Audu had charged the accused with criminal trespass and theft contrary to section 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State penal code laws. 

Prosecutor Audu while narrating the matter to court, said, the complainant, one Alice Daniel reported the case at the NSCDC office located at Kafanchan on the 15th of July, 2024. 

Pointing out further, Audu clarified to the court that the convict stole tubers of yam from the complainants’ farm in Zonkwa on two different occasions. 

According to him, the convict confess to the crime during the investigation.
