The Chairman of the Online Media Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ekiti State, Comrade Ayodele Abere, has urged online journalists to prioritize verification and accuracy in their reportage as he extended Christmas greetings to practitioners across the state.

Comrade Abere who made the call in Ado-Ekiti, stressed that the speed of online publishing must not replace the responsibility of verifying information before posting, especially during the period that misinformation spreads rapidly.

He noted that online journalism plays a critical role in shaping public opinion and information dissemination saying unverified reports could damage public trust, fuel panic, and undermine credibility of the profession.

The online chairman reminded journalists that truth, balance, and accountability remain the core values of journalism, regardless of platform, and called on practitioners to resist the pressure to publish unconfirmed stories for traffic or popularity.

Comrade Abere emphasized that Christmas represents reflection, responsibility, and renewed commitment to ethical conduct, urging online journalists to use this season to recommit themselves to professional standards.

He also assured members of the online chapel that the NUJ would continue to support training, collaboration, and advocacy aimed at strengthening digital journalism in Ekiti State.

The Chairman concluded by wishing all online journalists in Ekiti State a joyful Christmas celebration and a successful New Year ahead, calling on them to celebrate peacefully with renewed dedication to credible journalism.
