Taraba Senators Cross Over As APC Gains Ground In Senate

Two serving senators from Taraba State have formally dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC, marking another major political shift in the National Assembly and strengthening the ruling party’s presence in the Senate.

The defections were announced on Wednesday during plenary when the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read letters of resignation submitted by the lawmakers, officially notifying the Red Chamber of their exit from the opposition party.

One of the defecting senators, Haruna Manu, who represents Taraba Central Senatorial District, said his decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents, political associates, and stakeholders within his district.

Manu explained that joining the APC would better position him to deliver effective representation and attract more developmental opportunities to his constituency, adding that the move was taken in the interest of the people he serves.

Also, defecting was Senator Shuaibu Lau of Taraba North Senatorial District, who attributed his decision to what he described as lingering internal crises and unresolved disagreements within the PDP at both the state and national levels.

The Senators’ defection comes barely days after Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, also left the PDP for the APC, a development many observers see as a sign of growing realignment within the state’s political structure.

With the latest defections, the APC has further consolidate its numerical strength in the Senate, as party switches continue to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 electoral contests.
