WADEMOS Commends Ghana on Peaceful Elections, Leadership Transition

The West Africa pro-democracy Civil Society Organization’s network, WADEMOS, has congratulate the people and government of Ghana on the country’s successful and peaceful general elections, as well as the smooth transition of power. Ghana, inaugurates its sixth president, John Mahama, on January 7, 2025.

WADEMOS praised Ghana’s commitment to electoral democracy and stability. The network urges President Mahama to address domestic, regional, continental, and global challenges, including maintaining regional integration amidst the pending exit of the Alliance of Sahelian States from ECOWAS.

The network called on President Mahama to engage with the Heads of State of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali to halt the official exit, scheduled for January 29, 2025. WADEMOS also emphasized the need for President Mahama to advocate for human rights in Ghana and across the subregion, and to support the adoption of a revised ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

As Ghana celebrates this democratic milestone, WADEMOS encourages other Heads of State to follow Ghana’s example in building a robust democratic structure that promotes free, fair, and credible elections, protects human rights, and advances inclusive governance. The network wishes President Mahama and the citizens of Ghana the best, looking forward to a productive term.
