YERP_Naija Calls For Quick Action On Electoral Reforms In 2026

The Youth-led Electoral Reform Project (YERP_Naija) has urged the National Assembly to act quickly on electoral reform bills in the new year, warning that further delays could affect preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In a New Year message, YERP_Naija congratulated Nigerians, especially young people, and commended members of the National Assembly for their service. 

The group said the new year should be a time for renewed commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

YERP_Naija noted that progress on electoral reforms has been uneven. As of December 26, 2025, the House of Representatives had completed clause-by-clause consideration and voting on amendments to the Electoral Act, describing the step as an important achievement.

However, the group expressed concern that the Senate did not begin voting on the bills before going on its end-of-year recess. The Senate is expected to resume plenary between the second and third week of January 2026, when work on the bills is expected to begin.

According to YERP_Naija, the delay has created uncertainty and makes it necessary for lawmakers to remain focused in the coming weeks to ensure reforms are completed on time.

The group said many of the proposals already considered reflect long-standing demands by young Nigerians for transparent, fair, and accountable elections. 

It added that these reforms show growing public agreement on the need to improve the country’s electoral system.

YERP_Naija also called attention to ongoing constitutional amendment processes related to electoral inclusion and integrity, warning that delays could limit their implementation as election timelines draw closer.

The organisation stressed that decisions taken by the National Assembly in the coming weeks will affect both the 2027 elections and public trust in democratic institutions. It described electoral reforms as essential and non-partisan measures needed for peaceful and credible elections.

The group further urged civil society organisations, the media, youth groups, and community leaders to continue engaging the public and lawmakers on the importance of timely reforms.

Supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI), YERP_Naija reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a credible and inclusive electoral system and called for the prompt passage of all necessary reforms.
