The above was contained in a press statement signed by Dauda Garuba, the Director of Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD – West Africa on Friday night and made available to Treasure Newspaper via the WhatsApp.

Dauda Garuba in his statement stated that, “as the people of Ghana goes out in tomorrow’s election (today), 18,772,221 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in 40,975 polling units, a significant increase from 17,027,941 million registered voters in the year 2020”.

He revealed a total of 13 contestants, including candidates spreading across the 9 political parties and 4 independent candidates vying for the Country’s Presidency and 276 parliamentary seats of the Country to be contested for.

According to the CDD – West Africa, today’s Ghana Presidential and parliamentary election is the 9th one since the Country returned to a constitutional rule in the year 1992.

The CDD – West Africa in its press statement urged Ghanaians to embrace peace and participate robustly and take the opportunity to shape a better future for themselves and their Country as they all file out to vote in today’s election.

Garuba however revealed that the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD – West Africa in conjunctions with the EPSG project, Co- funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has deployed a study mission in observing the Ghana’s elections and supported it with several advocacies to promote its electoral processes across the region of the Ghana.

CDD noted further “how some lingering tensions from the Ghana’s 2020 elections by the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, has led to the rejection of results, opting to pursue a case in court, accusing the Country’s Electoral Commission, EC, of partisanship and operating as an extension of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, currently in the helms of affairs in the Country.

CDD pointed out “that the allegations from the National Democratic Congress, alongside fears of mismanagement and misconduct during the period have contributed to a growing erosion of trust in the Country’s Electoral Commission. Despite this, it is generally believed that a vast majority of Ghanaians support the conduct of an election as the best way to choose their leaders.

“The Election Observer Group rated the citizens trust and confidence in Ghana’s Electoral Commission to be 28%, a statistics considered low when compared with the past record”.

Adding, CDD explained how Ghana is presently faced with some challenges ranging from economic issues occasioned by the growing inflation in the Country, the mounting public debt, youth unemployment, social protests associated with illegal mining, all resulting into backdrop and widespread of public dissatisfaction with the government.

CDD used the opportunity to advise the Ghana electorates to weigh their stakes, participate actively during voting in the election thereby using such opportunity to elect leaders that will be accountable to them and who will be willing to tackle the Country’s sundry economic challenges.

CDD also appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to maintain peace and uphold sterling democratic principles of free, fair and transparent electoral process considered vital to preserving Ghana’s standing as one of the strongest models of democracy in the West Africa.
