Igboho Launches Registered Iru Ekun Network, Claims Presidential Backing to Combat Bandits in South-West

Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has announced the launch of a new security outfit called the Iru Ekun Security Network, which he says is registered and has the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a viral video circulating online, Igboho said he consulted President Tinubu before unveiling the initiative and received his backing. 

The network, according to him, is designed to support efforts to flush criminal elements out of forests and rural communities across the South-West.  

Igboho called on all Yoruba people to join the effort, framing it as a response to rising insecurity in the region. “They are doing this because a Yoruba man is now the president,” he stated, linking recent attacks to the fact that a Yoruba currently leads the country.  

He emphasized that the outfit is legal, operational, and meant to complement existing security agencies by improving rapid response and intelligence gathering in hard-to-reach areas.  

However, the claim has sparked debate. 

Groups like the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) have warned against legitimizing ethnic-based outfits, saying it could threaten national unity. 

Other reports note that Igboho is still seeking official approval from the Federal Government, South-West governors, DSS, police, and the military before full deployment.  

Social media reactions are mixed — some users pledged support and offered to join, while others questioned the credibility of the presidential approval claim and compared the network to Amotekun.  

Meanwhile efforts by Treasure Newspaper to reach out to the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga for clarifications is yet to be responded to, as at the time of filing this report.
