Ekiti NUJ Launches Situation Room to Protect Journalists

… Fight Fake News Ahead of Gubernatorial Poll

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has set up a situation room in Ado-Ekiti ahead of Saturday’s governorship election to protect journalists on duty and curb the spread of fake news. 

In a statement, NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, said the centre is located at the NUJ Secretariat and will operate as a rapid-response hub for media practitioners covering the polls. 

It will monitor and document cases of harassment, intimidation, and attacks against journalists. 

Babatuyi explained that the move was prompted by the growing use of disinformation and fake news to sway voters and heighten tension during elections. 

To counter this, the situation room will collaborate with fact-checking organizations and media stakeholders to verify viral claims, debunk false narratives as they emerge, and supply reporters with accurate, vetted information.
