Rotary Club Renovates Akure Hostel, Giving Special Students a Modern Home

Akure – Hope has returned to students of the School for the Hearing Impaired, Akure, after the Rotary Club of Akure Prestige commissioned a newly renovated boys’ hostel on Tuesday 16th, 2026.

The complete overhaul of Block A of the Boys’ Hostel was the club’s 2025/2026 Star Club Project. The unveiling ceremony drew government officials, Rotarians, school administrators, students, and other stakeholders.

Club President, Mr. Dauda Ajibade, said the renovation was his signature project for the Rotary year, underscoring Rotary’s commitment to humanitarian service and community development.

The intervention began in July 2025 during a donation visit. Ajibade noted that club members found several school facilities in disrepair, but prioritized the boys’ hostel due to its poor condition and the urgent need to create a safer, more conducive living space for students.

Representing the Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Ogbekele Ajibefun, Mr. Olu Obajulaye commended the club for complementing government efforts in education. He described the renovation as a major boost to the welfare and learning of hearing-impaired students, adding that such public-private partnerships are vital for upgrading schools.

The highlight of the event was the formal unveiling of the hostel by Rotarians, government representatives, and guests. Students celebrated with a novelty football match and cultural displays, reinforcing the message that disability is not inability.

According to the Project Director, the building was transformed from a dilapidated structure into a modern, comfortable facility. Immediate Past President, Mr. Victor Adegoke, urged the school to maintain the building so it can serve students for years to come.

The school’s Principal thanked the Rotary Club of Akure Prestige for the gesture and pledged proper upkeep of the facility for current and future students.

Stakeholders at the event emphasized that government cannot meet all development needs alone, calling for more collaboration from corporate and community groups. They noted that the project will not only improve students’ living conditions but also strengthen inclusive education in Ondo State.
