Maiduguri: EFCC Secures Convictions of Two Over N14.8m Misappropriation

A Borno State High Court in Maiduguri has sentenced two individuals to prison for misappropriating a combined N14.8 million in separate fraud cases.

In a press release issued on Monday, July 14, 2026, by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity at the EFCC, the Commission confirmed that Justice B.T. Zannah of the Borno State High Court delivered the judgment on Monday, July 13, 2026.

The convicts, Babagana Bukar and Hauwa Chabri, were arraigned by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on separate one-count charges of criminal misappropriation. 

According to the EFCC, Bukar dishonestly diverted N8.8 million entrusted to him in 2025 for the supply of 100 bags of IRS flour and 50 bags of BUA sugar to Bunu Gambo Liman. The funds, received through Babakura Umar and Bello Adamu, were converted to his personal use.

Chabri was found to have misappropriated N6 million belonging to Mohammed Samaila Yakubu. The money, intended for the supply of beef in 2025, was similarly diverted for personal use.

Both defendants pleaded guilty when the charges were read to them in court. Prosecution counsel A.D. Abdulmalik urged the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.

In his plea for leniency, Bukar’s counsel, Mustapha, informed the court that his client had fully repaid the petitioner. Justice Zannah sentenced Bukar to one year imprisonment with an option of a N100,000 fine.

Chabri, who pledged to restitute her victim, was ordered to repay the N6 million to the petitioner. In default, she will serve a two-year prison term.

The EFCC noted that both cases stemmed from breach of trust in commercial supply agreements within Maiduguri. The convictions were secured under Sections 296 and 297 of the Borno State Penal Code Law.
