Stakeholders Harp On Women’s Participation In Politics, Advocate Gender Quota System

A high-level dialogue convened by the Balm in Gilead Foundation for Sustainable Development (BIGIF) in collaboration with UN WOMEN brought together esteemed stakeholders to tackle the pressing issue of women’s political participation in Nigeria.

The event recently held at the All Saints Guest House, Ado-Ekiti, aimed at enhancing understanding of the gender quota system, examine challenges and prospects, and foster strategic collaboration among non-state actors.

The Executive Director of BIGIF, Mrs. Tumininu Adedeji, emphasized the importance of the dialogue, stressing that women’s demand for political inclusion is not a contest against men, but an appeal for equitable opportunities. She called on men to support women’s involvement in governance and leadership.

Mrs. Oluwakemi Akomolede, State Acting Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), lamented the male-dominated nature of Nigeria’s political landscape, describing it as a subtle form of gender-based violence (GBV) against women. She advocated for constitutional provision of dedicated political positions for women and pledged NOA’s commitment to championing women’s political participation.

The dialogue featured a paper presentation by Mr. Nelson Akerele, who highlighted various types of gender quotas, including reserved seats, candidate quotas, and voluntary party quotas. He urged stakeholders to take action, emphasizing that without affirmative policies and robust implementation mechanisms, Nigeria’s efforts at gender quota adoption would remain incomplete.

The event culminated in the signing of resolutions and commitments, marking a pivotal moment in the quest for gender-inclusive political reforms in Nigeria. As stakeholders continue to champion women’s political participation, the country inches closer to a more equitable and democratic future.
