Akwa Ibom CDHR Chair Seeks Public Support For Victims Affected By Fire Outbreak

The Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Comrade Ndifreke Afangide is seeking the support and assistance of the public for the victims whose properties and goods were completely razed down by the devastating fire outbreak which occurred at a Plaza in Ikot Ukpong Village, Obot Akara Local Government Area of the State in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to the CDHR Chairman, Comrade Comrade Ndifreke Afangide, he expressed concern on the devastating fire outbreak that razed down an entire plaza in his country home, Ikot Ukpong Village located at the Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Giving his eye witness account, Comrade Afangide, said, “the incident took place between the hours of 3:00 am and 6:00 am on Saturday, 21st December 2024, and it resulted n the destruction of properties worth over N100 million.

Comrade Afangide confirmed in his statement, “that no lives were lost in the disaster”

He described Ikot Ukpong Village as a home to several distinguished personalities, including Engr. Chalse Usua Akpan, the Executive Director, Engineering, Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom State River Basin Authority; Engineer Nsikakabasi Ekam, Consultant with Mobil Nigeria; and Idongesit Ntekpere, former Member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The Akwa Ibom CDHR State Chairman, however used the opportunity to expressed his gratitude to Engineer Chalse Akpan and Nsikakabasi Ekam, for promptly visiting the scene to console the victims. 

Afangide expressed his deep concern majorly for the welfare and safety of the affected community members.

He also used the opportunity to call for care and support for the families and victims affected in the fire rage considering the present economic hardships that has bedevilled the Country. 

Adding, Afangide also pleaded with the relevant authorities at the local and state levels to come to the rescue of the victims and provide immediate assistance and support to them.

He also advised the government and other stakeholders in the State to take proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the State in the future.
