Former President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed the contributions of the ThisDay Newspaper to the Country’s development and nation building considering the 30 years of the existence of the media organization which he described as a national benefit.

The former Nigerian military leader, Muhammadu Buhari made the submissions while acknowledging the roles played by the ThisDay Newspapers

in shaping Country’s press on the occasion of the celebrations of the 30th anniversary, where he used the opportunity to described the publication as one of the most significant milestones in the development of the Nigerian press.

Buhari in a further remarks also described the ThisDay Newspapers as a “national institution” whose ownership extends beyond its registered shareholders and belongs to all Nigerians.

He emphasised the need for the society to protect the existence of the newspaper, acknowledging its profound impact on the media landscape.

“What is important about ThisDay,” Buhari stated, “is not only because they re-launched the sustainable printing of the Nigerian newspaper in full color, a move that the rest of the papers quickly followed, but also because of their consistent focus on business, economy, and politics. I don’t think there is any serious politician in the country who would go to bed without seeing the newspaper.”

Buhari also underscored the newspaper’s unwavering commitment to promoting free speech, dialogue, and nation-building. He highlighted these qualities as central to the paper’s enduring legacy.

“ThisDay takes it as a major objective to promote free speech, dialogue, and a serious preoccupation with nation-building”, he added, acknowledging the publication’s role in fostering a more informed and engaged society.

In his tribute, the former President praised ThisDay for its professional integrity and fairness in reporting.

He pointed out that while governments may occasionally wrong the press, ThisDay remains unbittered and objective in its coverage.

“We may have wronged them as a government. Every government in the country-advertently and inadvertently wrongs the press, but with ThisDay, you can never see bitterness in their pages”, the former President submitted.
