Burning Of INEC Office: An Attempt To Disenfranchised Citizens

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Ebonyi State Branch has condemned in strongest term the burning of the INEC office in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The body used the opportunity to call and asked the INEC not to disfranchise citizens because of burnt voters card.

“Burning of INEC offices across Nigeria is a desperate plan by some politicians to rig 2023 election by disenfranchising   citizens from performing their constitutional rights and by that, give them opportunity to install their preferred candidate against the general interest of the masses”.

We have observed that some INEC offices across the Country where sensitive materials including Permanent Voters Card (PVCs) are kept is now a point of target for destruction in order to deprived citizens from performing their constitutional rights and there by giving them opportunity to massively rig the forth coming election.

The destruction is being undetermined by some people to deny some number of voters from using their PVC in the largest and most populated local government in Ebonyi State as an action that is politically motivated.

The leadership of the CDHR in Ebonyi State however expressed it’s readiness to resist such unholy move to disfranchise citizens during the forthcoming 2023 general elections in the State 

The Human Rights body however called on the INEC Chairman, Professor  Mahmoud Yakubu to ensure that no citizen is disfranchised because of the burnt PVC since the biometrics is already captured and can be validated during the voting. 

They also affirmed to the leadership of the INEC in Abuja that, there is no good reason to deny any citizen from performing their constitutional rights.
