Ekiti Govt Orders Immediate Relocation Of Iworoko Central Market After Fatal Accidents

The Ekiti State Government has ordered the immediate relocation of the Iworoko Central Market in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, following an incessant fatal accidents occurring at the location. 

Announcing the decision on Monday, the Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye directed the market stakeholders and landowners to immediately effect the directive in the community.

The market’s relocation has been a topic of discussion since 2019, when 19 people lost their lives in an accident, prompting the Iworoko community to request the market’s relocation. However, the process was delayed due to opposition from the Arinjale family, who claimed ownership of the proposed relocation land.

Despite the controversy, the Ekiti State Government have reaffirmed its commitment to relocating the market, citing the need to protect lives and properties. 

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti State, Mr. Dayo Apata (SAN) emphasized that the government has the authority to acquire land for public interest, as stated in the State Land Use Act.

The relocation plan has however sparked mixed reactions from the community. While some argued that the land ownership dispute is immaterial and that the relocation is necessary to prevent further accidents.

Others like Mr. Julius Babalola of the Arinjale family, claimed that the land was given to the Catholic Church for a school and should not be used for the market.

The Ekiti State Government has assured that necessary compensations will be provided to affected landowners. The Chairman of Ifedara Local Council Development Area, Hon. Lawrence Ogunsanya, have also appealed to stakeholders to release the land peacefully, emphasizing that the relocation is in the best interest of the community.
