The Osoba Family of Abeokuta, Ogun State, has announced with deep sorrow the passing of its daughter, Tope Osoba, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

According to the family, Tope died under very sad and unfortunate circumstances following a prolonged period of emotional distress, anxiety, depression and self-medication. The family described her as a highly cerebral and resourceful person who became emotionally vulnerable after the death of her biological mother and her own battle with cancer, from which she had temporarily recovered.

In May 2025, months after withdrawing from her maternal family in Iperu, Tope reached out to her paternal aunt, Revd. Mother Kehinde Osoba Eritosin, seeking reintegration into the Osoba family for parental care and support.

Following consultations with key family members, Revd. Mother Eritosin embraced her as an adopted daughter, introduced her to her children and added her to the family platform for close monitoring and guidance. Since then, Tope had been confiding in her about her personal and marital challenges.

On Friday, July 31, 2026, Tope reportedly made a distress call to Revd. Mother Eritosin over her deteriorating health and issues with her fiancé, with whom she had cohabited for about two years. On Sunday, August 2, 2026, while on medical drips for an undisclosed illness, she asked Revd. Mother Eritosin to speak with her fiancé and forwarded his contact. Concerned about her condition, Revd. Mother Eritosin invited the fiancé for an urgent meeting. He was said to have promised to see her on Tuesday, August 5 — the day Tope sadly passed away.

The family disclosed that about five weeks ago, Revd. Mother Eritosin had also purchased an aso ebi for Tope ahead of a family function on Victoria Island, Lagos, which she could not eventually pick up from the dispatch rider.

On Tuesday, August 4, Revd. Mother Eritosin received a call from Tope’s friend and hairdresser that Tope had not slept all night, was acting strangely and making disturbing comments about death.

She advised that Tope be brought to her church in Ikorodu for medical and spiritual care. At the time, Revd. Mother Eritosin was in Abule Egba, Lagos, attending the 8-day Service of Songs for the late Supreme Head of the C&S Unification Church, Baba Aladura Alogbo.

While at the service, she received a call from the Divisional Police Officer, Igbogbo Police Station, Ikorodu, that Tope and those with her were in custody after causing a scene in traffic around Ita-Elewa, Ikorodu. Tope had reportedly come out of the vehicle and started screaming. Revd. Mother Eritosin confirmed Tope as her daughter and pleaded for their release to her church in Ikorodu, as she was held up in traffic returning from Abule Egba. The police subsequently released Tope to her friend and two maternal cousins who had arrived from Sagamu.

However, rather than waiting for Revd. Mother Eritosin at the church, Tope’s handlers took her to a Celestial Church in Ikorodu for prayers, where she was reportedly given water and other drinks. Her maternal cousins then decided, with her said consent, to take her to their home in Sagamu.

On their way to Sagamu, Tope reportedly developed strange reactions after taking cold water and became restless and uncomfortable in the vehicle. Her cousins rushed her to a private hospital in Sagamu, where doctors referred her to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu [formerly Ogun State University Teaching Hospital], due to the critical nature of her condition. According to those with her, she passed away inside the vehicle on arrival at the hospital, before she could be attended to.

Revd. Mother Eritosin only learned of her death on Wednesday, August 6, when Tope’s friend finally returned her calls.

The family said the clarification became necessary to set the record straight and to appeal to sympathizers and the general public to remain calm and allow the family to mourn in peace.

“It would not honour Tope’s memory to sensationalize her death on social media. We are focused on giving her a befitting burial,” the statement said.

The family expressed gratitude to her friends, colleagues, associates, fans and the general public for their concern and support during the difficult period, adding that a memorial service will be announced after due consultation.
