Stroke-Hit Pro-Democracy Activist, Awa Bamiji Cries Out to Tinubu for Lifeline Abroad

Renowned pro-democracy activist, Comrade Awa Bamiji, has made a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for urgent financial assistance to enable him seek advanced medical treatment abroad.

Bamiji, who suffered a stroke on November 12, 2024, made the appeal in an open letter dated July 15, 2026, from his residence at Jinarere area, off Iyana Church, Ibadan, Oyo State.

In the letter, the progressive campaigner thanked God for sparing his life and commended the medical team at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, for their efforts in stabilizing his condition.

He however said his recovery is far from complete and requires specialised care that is beyond his current means.

According to him, he still needs intensive physiotherapy, speech therapy and regular medication, all of which have become financially overwhelming.

Bamiji disclosed that almost two years after the stroke, he is yet to regain his normal speech, struggles to walk long distances, and suffers severe tremors that make it difficult for him to write or operate electronic devices.

He expressed profound gratitude to Nigerians of goodwill, political leaders and friends who came to his aid at the early stage of his illness, noting that all donations received have been expended on hospital bills, accommodation and daily upkeep.

He listed among his benefactors, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who donated N2 million, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), who gave N1 million, former Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Tajudeen Olusi, Chief Henry Ajomale, Brig. Tayo Koleoso (Rtd), Dr Adeleke Mamora, Chief Wale Oshun and several other patriots.

The activist added that he was forced to sell his personal Audi car for N1 million to sustain his treatment.

Bamiji said despite the support, he is now in serious financial distress and lives in a rented apartment in Ibadan, unable to afford the continued cost of his rehabilitation.

He appealed to President Tinubu, whom he described as a compassionate leader and fellow progressive, to intervene and approve overseas medical treatment to help him achieve full recovery.
