Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Sunday launched the Iru Ekun Security Network at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Igboho, who said he was in Abuja on Saturday to strengthen the operational framework of the outfit and expand its effectiveness across the South-West, disclosed that no fewer than 20,000 volunteers have so far enlisted in the organization.
In a statement from his media office, Igboho claimed the outfit has the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to complement community security efforts and tackle criminality in Yorubaland and parts of Kwara and Niger States.
According to the statement, the Oyo launch comes after similar inaugurations in Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun and Ondo States, alongside engagements with traditional rulers and community leaders across the region.
The statement added that since its establishment, Iru Ekun has been collaborating with the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to curb abduction, killings and other security challenges, particularly in the South-West.

Igboho commended the large turnout of volunteers in Ibadan, describing it as a milestone and a demonstration of the commitment of Oyo residents to community safety.
“The impressive development represents a milestone which indicates genuine interest among Oyo people in active participation to ensure the safety and security of residents, irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliation,” he said.
Explaining his Abuja visit, Igboho said: “I was in Abuja this morning so that Iru Ekun’s security responsibilities can be further strengthened. This is because Iru Ekun is the brainchild of South-West traditional rulers, and it will continue to serve its purpose of promoting peace and effective security in our communities.
“I received the call last night to come to Abuja. My Abuja trip was as a result of the collaboration with our traditional ruler, the Olubadan of Ibadanland.”
He expressed gratitude to traditional rulers across the country and to President Tinubu for providing what he described as a platform for Iru Ekun to operate.
While addressing volunteers, Igboho also canvassed support for President Tinubu’s re-election, urging members of the security network and other Nigerians to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming presidential election.
