The Osun State born History Lecturer lecturing at the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti gave the above advise while delivering a lecture at the Omoluabi Day / Award 2023 organised by the National Association of Osun State Students, NAOSS, on the theme titled: “Self – Development and Socio Economic Development” and held at the Oodua Hall of the Ekiti State University in Ado Ekiti on Friday.

While delivering his lecture, the Guest Lecturer, Dr. Oyewale Oluwaseun appreciated the organisers of the event for the opportunity granted him to speak on the theme.

He urged them to note that, “whether they like it or not, they are all students of history. We are making history everyday. What we are going to do today is going to be a remarkable history in the history of the Osun State Students Association at the Ekiti State University”.

He went on to commend the President of the Association at the Ekiti State University in Ado Ekiti, Comrade Rasak Opeyemi Abdullahi for deeming it fit to organize such a programme despite the hardship in the Country at this period. He told them not to relent but rather see what the present Executives of the Association are going through as part of the challenges of leadership they must face and encounter.

Oyewale in his lecture pointed out the need for the Students to understand that Self – Development must be the overall interest of the Social Economic Development as well as the key to any meaningful development in any Nation.

He stressed the need for them to know that everybody has been endowed with one talent or the other. He urged them to understand that, it is not every person that goes to school will use their Certificate to get their daily living. “This is not a curse. Some of us only have the certificate.

He described Self Development as when one understand oneself and his or her ability. Asking the students, he said, “let us ask ourselves at what age can a person receive self – development as a youth. At what age can we call ourselves a youth? Is it at 18 – 40 years or at 20 – 50 years?, he queried.

Explaining further, Oyewale said. “some youths said youth started at the ages 18- 40; some said 18-50 years. We are still youths when we still have strength to move from place to another. Age does not really mean a yardstick to call ourselves a youth”.

He reminded the students about a Yoruba adage which says, the Yoruba used to say that, a fool at 40 is a fool forever. The Bible says there is time and season for everybody. “Some people have been destined that they won’t leave their village before they become great in life from where they will be sending those in Lagos State an errand from their village, thereby turning themselves into slaves.

Abdullahi used the opportunity to appreciate his colleagues for their support in finance and mentally, which greatly contributed to his significant impacts running the affairs of the Association as President.

He reminded his colleagues the believe that there’s no journey without challenges. “He stated that during the course of his administration, they experienced a storm that almost swept them off their feet. The strike, for instance, made us lose the essence of the time we had to deliver. However, this administration is arguably one of the most productive ones ever in the history of NAOSS”, he expressed.
