University Don Advocates Fiscal Policy To Address Nigerian Challenges

A Don at the Bamidele Olumilua University Of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, Professor Joseph Ojo Ekiran has advocated for the Federal  Government of Nigeria to adopt the use of Fiscal Policy to address and solve the various challenges confronting Nigeria as a Country.

Professor Joseph Ojo Ekiran dropped the idea on Tuesday at the Pre – Degree Lecture Theatre of the Bamidele Olumilua University Of Education Science and Technology while delivering the 4th inaugural lecture of the Institution titled: “Money Mis Road: A Paradigm Shift Of Fiscal Insanity In Nigeria”. 

According to Ekiran, a Professor of Economics and Public Finance expert, said, “to solve and end many challenges facing Nigeria in the areas of security, education, power, security, weapon, funding, corruption, budgeting and utilisation of resources God has endowed the nation with, recommended the use of Fiscal Policy as a way out”. 

When asked if Nigeria is riped enough to adopt Fiscal Policy as a way out of its challenges, Professor Ekiran said, the Country is already over – riped for the idea. 

He added that the introduction of fiscal policy can be used to resolve the long age insecurities that has bedevilled Nigeria as a Nation. 

Speaking during the delivery of the 4th inaugural lecture, Professor Ekiran highlights his recommendations to include the reinforcement of fund recovery agencies like the EFCC and ICPC by ensuring specialized units are created within the agencies to track all illicit financial flows, conduct forensic audits and repatriate looted funds across borders; ensure assets declaration and lifestyle audits are carried out by enforcing Section 11 of the Code of Conduct Bureau Act for public officials and seek for international cooperation and mutual legal assistance courtesy of instruments like the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption as well as a Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative.

Other recommendations introduced by Professor Ekiran includes the introduction of whistleblower protection and incentive framework; establishment of a fiscal responsibility and sanity commission; consolidating and digitization of all government revenue collection; mandatory forensic audit of ministries, departments and agencies; integration of artificial intelligence in budget monitoring; establishment of special fiscal courts; national fiscal integrity curriculum in schools; legislation of full transparency and citizen feedback portals and redirecting recovered funds to national transformation among others. 

Professor Ekiran, the University lecturer also recommend the use of fiscal policy to fight corruption in Nigeria borrowing the China idea and approach since late  1970. 

He also called on the Nigerian leaders to sit up and account for the numerous billions and trillions that has gone down the drain through the year in and year out inclusion in the budgets of the Country. 

Also, speaking with the press after the lecture, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, Professor Oluyede Adeleke Aturamu gave the assurance that the institution management will continue to ensure the development and improvement of the infrastructures on the campus, most especially as it regards the construction of more hostels facilities for students to be residential.

He also acknowledged that the institution needs more funds to fix a lot of the challenges confronting it, to make the institution the best in the world as preparations are in top gear for its 2nd convocation ceremony holding in March, 2026.
