E-CMR Controversy: IGP Egbetokun Suspends Enforcements

… Approves Enlightenments

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has given order for the immediate suspension of enforcement for the controversial E-CMR programme which was earlier introduce by him to help curb violent crimes across the Country to enable the Nigeria Police Force embarked on a Nationwide enlightenments for Nigerians. 

IGP Egbetokun through a circular signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer and made available to Treasure Newspaper on Sunday, reviewed the previous Nigeria Police Force decision targeted at kick-starting the enforcement for the Electronic-Central Motor Registration on the 29th of July, 2024, thereby suspending its commencement and instead approving sensitizations to keep Nigerians well abreast about it.

Speaking on the benefits of the E-CMR programme, ACP Adejobi highlights it’s benefits to include the need to safe guide and secure all types of vehicles in the Country, motorcycles inclusive thereby collating datas imputed into the system by vehicle owners and acting on such to flag the vehicles if reported stolen.

Adejobi added that the E-CMR will help made available a firsthand database to the Police, thereby curbing vehicular crimes as dedicated officers can access real-time comprehensive data of every vehicle on their tablets.

The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force through the press release, equally urged Nigerians being wrongly – informed about the E-CMR programme, to totally disregard the news and insinuations going round in certain quarters, stating that the initiative is aimed at generating revenues. “The E-CMR programme is not a revenue generating platforms but an initiative to digitalize policing for effectiveness and general safety of lives and properties of the Nigerian people.

Clarifying further, Adejobi emphasized that the E-CMR will prevent multiple registration of vehicles and serve as a database to collate biometric and other data of vehicle owners and individuals, and adding value to the national database and incident report portal generated from other Ministries, Departments and Agencies towards general security of the citizens.

Members of the public are however urged to obtain the digitalized CMR certificate online at https://cmris.npf.gov.ng.

The Country’s Police Chief, IGP Egbetokun appealed to Nigerians to show understanding and supports by keying into the E-CMR system.

He also warned all Police Officers to desist from requesting for E-CMR certificates as individuals found extorting or exploiting members of the public on the guise of not having E-CMR certificates will be punished, considering the order he has issued for the suspension of enforcement which will be done by only the dedicated officers.
