Ekiti 2026: INEC Unveils Assistive Tools to Boost Disability Voting Access

Ahead of the Ekiti State 2026 Governorship Election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled assistive tools to boost voting process for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The Commission made the revelations at a stakeholders’ engagement held at the Dexembra International Hotel, Ado Ekiti, bringing together electoral officials, disability advocates, and community leaders to tackle barriers that often keep PWDs from the polls.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi said the goal is to eliminate obstacles that restrict PWDs from voting independently. 

He described inclusion as a fundamental right, not a privilege. 

According to him, the programme will build the capacity of electoral officers and ensure assistive devices are properly developed and distributed statewide.

During the session, INEC showcased tools like the Grey Ballot Guide and magnifying glasses, designed to help voters with visual and mobility impairments cast their ballots without assistance. 

Officials emphasized that the impact of these tools hinges on thorough training for poll workers and better awareness among PWD voters.

INEC also flagged challenges that could undermine the effort: poor distribution of materials, gaps in staff training, and logistics hurdles in rural and hard-to-reach areas. 

The Commission stressed the need for deliberate planning so devices reach all communities well before election day.

Dr. Omoseyindemi charged electoral officers to uphold professionalism, warning that failure to deploy assistive devices correctly could disenfranchise voters and damage the credibility of the process.

Disability advocates welcomed INEC’s move but demanded more action. Mr. Ania Sesan Tokunbo called for polling units with better physical access, improved sign language interpretation, and more dignified conditions at voting centres.

Ekiti State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mrs. Akomolede Oluwakemi, praised INEC for the direct engagement. 

She encouraged PWDs to turn out in large numbers, reminding them they have the right to vote and to contest for office.

Mrs. Nwanna Perpetual Ezinwa, an Assistant Director from Abuja, urged stronger collaboration between INEC and disability groups to sustain progress. 

The meeting closed with a joint pledge to deliver an election that is credible and inclusive for every eligible voter in Ekiti.
