Ahead of this Sunday’s International Day of the Girl Child, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for Ekiti Central Senatorial District in the 2027 elections, Princess Monica Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe, has pledged continued mentorship and expanded opportunities for girls, while calling on government, stakeholders and families across Ekiti and Nigeria to end child marriage and invest decisively in girls’ rights.

Speaking on the 2026 theme, “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” Princess Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe said the theme is timely and urgent, noting that the future of the nation is inseparable from how it treats its girls today.

“As a mother of girls – all my children are girls – this cause is very dear to my heart,” she said. “Every day, I see in my daughters the boundless potential that exists in every Nigerian girl. What they need is opportunity, mentorship and a society that believes in them.”

The senatorial hopeful said girl-child education remains the most powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty, end early marriage and inequality.

“When you educate a girl, you educate a family, a community and a nation. We must ensure that no girl in Ekiti Central is forced out of school into marriage. We must give them classrooms, not bridal rooms. We must give them books, not burdens,” she said.

Princess Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe stressed the need for structured mentorship to help girls build self-confidence and resilience, urging parents and leaders to deliberately expose girls to female role models who have shattered the glass ceiling in politics, business, science, education and leadership.

“Our girls must know that anything is surmountable. They must be able to look up and see women who have defied limitations and know that they too can rise. They must believe in themselves because we first believe in them,” she added.

She called on the Ekiti State Government, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and development partners to scale up investments in safe school environments, scholarships for indigent girls, digital literacy, and enforcement of laws that protect girls from all forms of abuse and early marriage.

“Investing in girls’ rights is not charity; it is smart economics and it is justice. An empowered girl becomes an empowered woman who will contribute to the growth of Ekiti and Nigeria,” she said.

She wished all girls in Ekiti Central, Ekiti State and Nigeria at large a happy and inspiring International Day of the Girl Child celebration.
