It was panic in Ado-Ekiti on Monday after a heavy downpour triggered severe flooding that submerged several streets, turning it into a raging river that swept a woman into an open canal.
Eyewitness video from the scene shows floodwater flowing with river-like force, completely covering the road and bringing movement to a halt for pedestrians, motorcyclists and motorists.
Traders along the roadside were badly hit, with shops inundated and tables and goods seen floating away in the current. Many residents were left stranded on both sides of the flooded street.
The most disturbing moment captured in the video shows a woman being swept away by the fast-moving flood into the drainage channel. She was seen struggling against the current as onlookers shouted in fear, unable to enter the water due to its dangerous force.
As of the time of filing this report, the condition and whereabouts of the woman remain unknown. Residents are calling for an urgent rescue operation.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by open and refuse-blocked canals and drainages in Ado-Ekiti during heavy rains.
