IGP Deploys CP Abayomi Shogunle to Ekiti Ahead of June 20 Governorship Election

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle to Ekiti State to oversee security operations for the governorship election slated for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

According to a statement issued Tuesday by the Ekiti State Police Command, CP Shogunle’s deployment is part of strategic measures approved by the IGP to ensure a peaceful, violence-free poll. 

On assumption of duty, CP Shogunle, immediately began strengthening enforcement protocols in line with the IGP’s directives. Key focus areas include intelligence mapping to prevent political violence, anti-thuggery and anti-cult operations, counter-misinformation campaigns, and secure movement of INEC materials and personnel.

The Command said it has activated a centralized operational framework to coordinate rapid response under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCES. Joint deployments will cover all polling units, collation centres, designated election facilities, voters, electoral workers, observers, journalists, and critical infrastructure statewide.

CP Shogunle assured that adequate personnel have been strategically deployed to identified flashpoints to prevent breaches of peace. 

He noted that officers on election duty have been briefed to act professionally and in strict compliance with the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

He called on political stakeholders, community leaders, and residents to cooperate with security agencies before, during, and after the election. 

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and delivering a free, fair, and credible election. CP Shogunle, a fellow of the Security Institute, previously led security operations for the November 2025 Anambra State Governorship election, which was described as peaceful.
