Secretariat Access Road in Disrepair as Potholes, Washed‑Away Sections Threaten Movement

The access road within the Ekiti State Secretariat in Ado‑Ekiti has deteriorated sharply, prompting concern among civil servants, visitors and residents as erosion and large potholes now threaten safe movement around the seat of government.

A NewsDirect visit found a major stretch of the road severely damaged, with one side already washed away. 

Motorists and pedestrians are forced to pick their way along a narrowed, failing pathway to reach key offices and buildings.

The road links several strategic ministries and agencies, including Health, Education, Information, Environment, Youth Development, and the New Map and Health Data Bank buildings. Along the route, the asphalt has failed in several places, shoulders are eroded, gravel is exposed and deep potholes have formed.

Some sections have caved in entirely, creating muddy craters and uneven surfaces that endanger vehicles, particularly during rains when potholes fill and become nearly invisible. The hazardous conditions have made access to the government complex increasingly difficult.

Civil servants who spoke with NewsDirect criticized the apparent neglect of critical infrastructure at the state’s administrative centre. 

One worker, who requested anonymity, called the situation “embarrassing and unbecoming” for a state secretariat, saying employees and visitors struggle daily to reach offices because “the road has practically collapsed.”

Observers say the road’s deterioration reflects wider problems with maintenance culture and infrastructure management in public institutions across the state. 

Residents and workers are urging the Ekiti State Government to rehabilitate the route urgently, arguing that repairs would improve mobility, lift worker morale and present a more professional image of governance.

The worsening condition has drawn public attention, with many insisting that infrastructure renewal should begin at government facilities that serve as Ekiti State’s administrative hub.
