Police, INEC Assure Peaceful Ekiti Governorship Poll as Material Distribution Begins

Ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the June 20, 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election, CP Abayomi Shogunle has outlined security and logistics arrangements for the distribution of election materials.

According to CP Shogunle, the process is being coordinated by Ekiti State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, with representatives of political parties, civil society organizations, and the media present to ensure transparency.

Material Distribution Process:

Sorting and distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials to all 16 local government areas are currently underway. The process began with materials for the farthest LGAs to ensure timely delivery. Police officers are escorting the materials from the central location at the CBN in Ado Ekiti to the various LGA headquarters, where they will be secured overnight under police guard.

From the LGA headquarters, materials will be moved to Registration Area Centres, RACs, on Friday. They will then be deployed to polling units early Saturday morning to ensure voting commences as scheduled.

Security Measures:

CP Shogunle said security planning is based on a multi-layered framework approved by Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun. The plan incorporates intelligence reports and risk assessments from multiple stakeholders.

Addressing concerns about potential flashpoints such as Ilejemeje LGA, he stated that adequate measures are in place to prevent disruptions. “We have identified different elements and are implementing measures to address them. If one layer is bypassed, others will not be,” he said.

He assured residents that the police, working with other agencies, are committed to delivering a free, peaceful, and violence-free election across the state, including areas not publicly disclosed for operational reasons.

INEC’s Position:

Ekiti State INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi said the exercise is proceeding smoothly and described the level of coordination as unprecedented.

On security in identified flashpoints, he confirmed that security agents have been deployed accordingly.

Dr. Omoseyindemi urged residents to come out en masse to vote for candidates of their choice in a peaceful atmosphere. “Ekiti has been peaceful, and we promise a free, fair, transparent, and inclusive election,” he said.
